Runner of the Week
Matthew Wappler
Matthew has his highest team finish of his career as his outkicks Jose Chavez.  Running a 21:18, he is only seconds from a PR and looks prepared to crush his performances from previous years.  After placing seventh on the team, he has earned himself a spot on Varsity in the First Annual Rick Miller Relays.  Matthew's performance was the bright spot on a day when the Cardinals placed last.

Runners of the Week
Luke Hebert & Aaron Lejuene
These two guys were borderline Varsity runners last year.  Anybody that was paying attention last track season would have guessed that they'd be about the same this year.  Well someone forgot to tell them that.  These two guys have shaken things up this year.  After losing 2 runners from last year's top five, some other schools probably thought this year would be their chance to beat BC.  Well thanks to the way these guys have stepped up, its hard to tell the other guys are gone.

Runner of the Week
Jose Chavez
Freshmen Jose Chavez finished in the top five for the first time this season.  With a mile and a half to go, he was 7th on the team.  With a half mile, still seventh.  Then he started his kick and moved all the way up to the fifth spot on the team passing about 7 other runners on his way up.  The only freshman on the Varsity squad this year, Jose's got a great future ahead of him.

Runner of the Week
Tim Cude
Senior MVP Tim Cude picks up his first individual win of the season with Trent Fulk from Nederland right on his heels until the last mile.  Hands down the leader of this team, Tim's first place finish sparked the guys on their way to our third consecutive Team Title.  Tim has finished fourth at regionals the past two seasons, and this year he's ready to move up a couple spots.  Next week we'll see Hudson and Huffman, and he'll get a glimpse of where he stands.

Runners of the Week
Lejuene, Hogan, and Hebert
I really don't like picking several people when I pick the runner of the week, but this week there was no way to leave any of these three guys out.  We had only had one goal for today.  Beat Hudson.  We knew if we could do that, we have a great shot of making it to State.  Well the last mile was an awesome race b/w Hudson's 3, 4 and our 3, 4, 5.  Well our 3, 4, 5 came through Sat, and that's why we won.  It was an awesome weekend, but don't get satisfied because neither Huffman nor Hudson was full strength.  Both were missing guys, so we're going to have to keep improving if we expect to make it to State.

Runner of the Week
Matthew Wappler

Watching the Varsity guys get warmed up for their race, I could tell they weren't really ready to race today.  It just didn't look like we had our game face on.  After beating Nederland by 14 at their meet, we almost got beat today.  Luckily for us, they were not at full strength, as they were missing a few runners.  In the 3A race, however, the JV guys stepped up and delivered a second win for BC.  I can't remember us ever winning both the big school and small school divisions at the same meet.  Leading the way for the JV guys was Matthew Wappler.  Matthew ran the race of his life, as he was only 20 seconds behind the fifth man on Varsity.  Matthew's performance was good enough for me to make room for one JV runner on our trip to McNeil next weekend.

Runner of the Week
Kirby Shepherd & Tim Cude
Kirby steps up to lead his team while Tim Cude gets seconds away from a PR competing in the 4A/5A division.  Kirby ran an amazing race as he was able to PR by 20 seconds on one of the toughest courses we run on.  Nobody could have predicted how well he would run today.  Kirby's finish helped spark us to an eight place finish out of 38 teams.  Tim arrived late to the starting line, and had to start behind 396 runners!  So much for getting out, he had to work to move up as far as he did.  If you add Tim to the race, we place third.  Only 45 points behind division winner Sanger.  We did very well today, and we are starting to look like the Region III favorites.  But Hudson and Huffman will be ready for us on Nov 7, so we had better keep working.  If all goes well, we'll get another shot at Sanger at the State Meet.

Runner of the Week
Luke Hebert
Over the years BC has had pretty good success in CC, but for various reasons we've never competed at Nike South.  With a change in date, this year we finally got the chance.  The guys were really fired up to go run some fast times.  But then it rained.  And rained.  And next thing you know the course was covered in mud.  Pretty much every Varsity guy in the program ran about 1 minute slower than last week.  But Hebert was only 30 seconds away from his PR on a day when most runners don't even come close.  Today Luke placed third on the team, his highest team place of the season.  So far this season, four different runners have been third man on the team.  That depth is what is going to carry us far this season.

Lufkin Coke Classic - 10/17

4A/5A boys (5-K)
10.  Time Cude 16:27

Runner of the Week
Tim Cude
Last Spring, Tim Cude placed 3rd in both the 3200 and 1600 at the Region III track meet.  This weekend he finished behind Hawley and Leos once again.  Several Region III schools were here this weekend, and only four region competitors ran faster than Tim this weekend.  Like many people from BC, Tim is displaced from his home.  He comes to school from Vinton everyday, and has not let it affect his running.  Tim leads the mens team in mileage (650), and with hard work and a little luck he'll lead them to State as well.

District 21-3A Meet - 10/28

Runner of the Week
The Long Red Line
Saturday October 25 = District Title Number Ten (8 out of the last 9) For The Cardinals.  Today was a great effort by our guys.  Our goal was to place all seven girls in the top 10, and bring home both the team and invidual titles.  Our seventh man placed eighth, Tim won the race, and we won yet another team title.  This has been a great year.  I know it has been a trying year, but keep on working for two more weeks.  You have a chance to make back to back trips to State.  Don't take anything for granted.  We're not going to make it just because we did last year.  We have to earn it all over again.  Give me two more hard weeks, and I'll give you two nights in Round Rock!!  Great Job Guys!!

Region III Meet - 11/7

Varsity Boys (3 miles)
4.  Tim Cude 16:40.4

Runner of the Week
Tim Cude
After a meet like this, who else could be runner of the week.  After losing his house and all the contents to Ike, and being displaced from his team for over a month, Tim's hard work finally paid off.  Tim finished fourth for the second straight season and is now a two time individual State Qualifier in Cross Country.  Next year, he hopes to crack the top three.

State Meet - 11/14

12. Tim Cude 16:29.7 5K

Runner of the Week
Tim Cude
This is definitely the easiest runner of the week Tim has ever obtained.  Tim placed 12th at the State Meet running a 16:29 5K.  A couple of the guys that beat Tim are graduating, so with hard work he has a great shot of cracking the top five as a senior.  Our lone state qualifier this year, Tim hopes to have a few teammates along for the ride next year.

Mary Nguyen
Coming off the best track season of her career, Mary kick started her junior CC campaign by winning the Nederland scrimmage meet for the second straight season.  But the difference is this year Huffman was there.  One of their top girls was out with an injury, but Mary was able to defeat the other two for the first time.  Mary leads a dedicated Varsity girls team that is hungry to make it back to Round Rock for the first time since 2003.  This is probably the most talented girls team I've coached, and they have a great shot to do it.

Mary and Meagan

Mary and Meagan each ran a solid race as they placed third behind two good teams in Huffman and Barbers Hill.  Mary and Meagan have each been working hard during the summer months.  They were both ready to race, as they lead the Lady Cardinals to a first place finish in the 3A/under division.  Each of them are coming off great track seasons where they both ran in the 12:30s and in the 5:40s.  They have set a goal of lowering those two mile times to 12:15, and there is no doubt in my mind that they can do it.

Ariel Chesson

Today was the day the Lady Cardinals faced the girls from St. Thomas Aquinas.  They have easily the best individual girl we've raced in a long time.  But instead of being intimidated, the Lady Cardinals went to work.  They were defininitely the better team, but we gave them a battle.  We lost by 11 points, but put our #8 in front of their fifth.  Ariel gets the runner of the week as she lowers her time for the third straight week.  She is one of only two seniors in our program that have ran Varsity all four years of HS.  She is working very hard to make sure her last CC race of her HS career is at the State Meet.

Runner of the Week
Courtney Meaux
After opening up the season placing eighth at the Tri Meet, Courtney wanted really badly to make Varsity.  Well after placing fifth on the team for the second straight week, I'd say she has a really good chance of keeping a spot on Varsity.  The only freshmen on the Varsity for the girls, Courtney has been working hard to get that letter jacket.  She knows we need our fifth girl to run a 12:59 for us to make it to state, and she's working to try and kae that happen.

Meagan finished first on the team for the first time this season as she set a new CC PR of 12:44.  This was Meagan's first time to dip below 13 minutes this season.  We set a team goal of having 3 girls at 12:15, and Meagan is now less than 30 seconds away from that goal.  All of the girls are having a great season, and I can't wait until regionals to see how we do.

This year's Pleasure Island meet should have been the chance for a local team to upset the Lady Cardinals.  With Mary and Ariel out with the flu, we were missing two of our top four runners.  But the girls were motivated to run well, and they all stepped up as Alex Holland got her highest team place of the year.  She placed third on a very tough course that many of our runners dread running on.  Alex's perforance helped the girls win the meet by 40 points.

All of the girls ran great this week as they were narrowly defeated by Barbers Hill.  After beating them at Nederland, Hurricane Ike really took a toll on our training.  We faced them at McNiel and they killed us.  Coming into the last 300 meters I told Ariel, Faith, and Meagan they had to win their pack for us to have a chance of beating Barbers Hill.  Ariel took off, and Faith and Meagan went with her.  With Ariel leading the way, they all finished in front of their pack.  We ended up losing by 1 point, but it still a great performance.

We all woke up @ 4:30am to travel all the way up to Lufkin to face the Hudson Hornets.  All year long we've said if we can compete with them, we have a shot of qualifying for State.  Jessica really stepped up and lead the team as she placed 11th in a very competitive 4A/5A field.  She finished ahead of Hudson's number one runner as Mary and Meagan both finished ahead of Hudson's number two.  With Jessica leading the way, Hudson beat us by only 6 points.  Three more weeks of hard work, and we'll have a great shot at making it to Round Rock.

For the third straight week, Jessica has really stepped up when it counted.  She ran a personal best time of 12:39.7 to lead our girls to a sixth place finish.  It was short of our goal, but the best finish in recent years.  If Jessica and the rest of the girls are willing to work, next year we can take the next step and qualify for the State Meet.
