Bridge City Cross Country -- A Tradition of Success
Season Summaries
1992 -- Lead by Juniors Joey Hayes and Chris Myers, the Cardinals????? Coach was Ken Pittman.
1993 -- Lead by Seniors Joey Hayes and Kevin Prescott, the Cardinals qualified for Regionals. Coach was Ken Pittman.
1994 -- Lead by Juniors Jack Baker and Dustin Allen, the Cardinals finish third in district?? There were no regional qualifiers, with Jack Baker the closest runner to qualifying in 6th place. Coach was Rick Miller.
1995 -- Seniors Jack Baker and Dustin Allen lead a young Cardinal team, including four freshmen and a sophmore that finished third in District. There were no regional qualifiers, with Jack Baker the closest runner to qualifying in 6th place. Coach was Rick Miller.
1996 -- Lead by Sophmores Justin Hill and Mark Segura, and Junior Peyton Nicholson, the Cardinals finish third in district to miss going to regionals by one spot. There were no regional qualifiers, with Cody Knight the closest runner to quailfying in 11th place. Coaches were David Johnston and Rick Miller.
1997 -- Lead by Juniors Justin Hill, Cody Knight, and Mark Segura, the Cardinals take down Nederland and claim the District 20-4A title for the first time. They would go on to finish fourth in 4A at regionals. Heather Beck lead the girls team and was the sole regional qualifier. Coaches were Christie Wiegreffe and Rick Miller.
1998 -- Lead by Seniors Cody Knight and Justin Hill, the Cardinals fall apart and place fourth in the district failing to build upon last year's success. Only Knight and Hill advance to Regionals, with Knight missing a state berth by five places. This was the year the UIL expanded the regional meet to include the top three teams (instead of two) and the top ten individuals (instead of five). Coaches were Christie Wiegreffe and Rick Miller.
1999 -- Lead by Junior Chris Heath and Sophmore Mark Nguyen, the Cardinals again fail to qualify for regionals in 4A. There were also no individual qualifiers, with Chris Heath the runner closest to qualifiying. Coaches were Rick Miller and Cody Knight.
2000 -- Lead by Senior Jason Ballard and Junior Mark Nguyen, the Cardinals win their first district title in 3A. They would go on to place fourth at Regionals despite lacking a strong fifth man. Jason Ballard became the first state qualifier in several years. Lead by Freshmen Brittany Findley and Katy Hill, the Lady Cardinals win their first district title in 3A. They would go on to place 8th at Regionals. Coaches were Rick Miller and Cody Knight.
2001 -- Lead by Sophmore Michael Goeddertz and Senior Mark Nguyen, the Cardinals win back to back district titles for the first time. Lead by Sophmores Katy Hill and Brittany Findley, the Lady Cardinals win back to back district titles for the first time. Coaches were Rick Miller and Cody Knight.
2002 -- Lead by Freshman Aaron Brannen and Junior Michael Goeddertz, the Cardinals win their third consecutive district title. The Cardinals would go on to place second at Regionals qualifying for the State Meet for the first time in school history. They placed fifth at State. Lead by Sophmores Chelsea Jackson and Erica Cabiness, the Lady Cardinals win their third consecutive district title. They would go on to place 17th at Regionals. A few of them made the trip to Round Rock to watch the guys, and you could see they wanted to get here themselves. Coaches were Rick Miller and Cody Knight.
2003 -- Lead by Sophmores Aaron Brannen and Brad Heath, and Senior Michael Goeddertz, the Cardinals win their fourth consecutive district title, as all seven runners placed in the top ten. "Fifth wasn't good enough," would be the slogan on their shirts that year. When it was all over, they had done much better than fifth. The Cardinals would go on to place a distant second to Elgin at Regionals (33-57), then rebound and go on to be narrowly defeated by eight points (90-98) at the State Meet to claim the silver medal. Lead by freshmen Erica and Jessica Garza, and Morgan Broussard, the Lady Cardinals win thier fourth consecutive district title. Their gutsy motto was "State Bound." It was gutsy because our girls had never made it to State in school history. The Lady Cardinals would go on to place third at Regionals sending them to state for the first time. They would finish ninth. Coaches were Rick Miller and Cody Knight.
2004 -- Lead by Juniors Aaron Brannen and Brad Heath, and Senior Brad Mason, the Cardinals win their fifth consecutive district title. The Cardinals finished in places 1-7, a feat that had never been accomplished in Bridge City. The Cardinals went on to defeat their competion at Regionals by a score of 36-125. They then won the first BC state championship in a team sport since 1966. The margin of victory was 52-91. Lead by Senior Ashlee Ellis and Sophmore Morgan Broussard the Lady Cardinals win their fifth consectutive district title. They went on to narrowly miss a second straight trip to state (120-139) as Senior Marie Pittman stepped up and had the best race of her career. Coaches were Rick Miller and Cody Knight.
2005 -- Lead by Seniors Aaron Brannen, Randy Becker, and Brad Heath, the Cardinals win their sixth consecutive district title, as all seven runners placed in the top ten. The Cardinals went on two claim back-to-back regional titles deafeating Hudson 55-71. This was the year that Hurricane Rita hit Bridge City, and seriously disrupted the team's training. Picked by many to repeat as state champs, the Cardinals were still able to place a very respectable second place behind Decatur (69-93). Lead by juniors Morgan Broussard and Jessica Garza the Lady Cardinals win their sixth consecutive district title. Also affected by the hurricane, the Lady Cardinals went on to finish tenth at regionals. Coaches were Rick Miller and Cody Knight.
2006 -- Lead by seniors Morgan Broussard, Erica Garza, and Jessica Garza, the Lady Cardinals win their seventh consecutive district title, placing five runners in the top seven. The Lady Cardinals went on to finish 12th at Regionals, with Morgan Broussard the top finisher at 23rd place. Lead by Junior Ryan Kelly and Freshman Tim Cude, The Cardinals streak of district titles came to an end as they finished second to Jasper after an injury plagued season. The Cardinals rebounded to defeat Jasper at Regionals, but only placed 14th. Ryan Kelly was the top finisher in 13th place. Coaches were Cody Knight and Brad Mason.
2007 -- Senior Ryan Kelly and sophmore Tim Cude led one of the deepest freshmen classes ever back to where the Cardinals belonged. After watching their district streak slip away last season, these two decided they need to get in back in style. The defeated Jasper by 43 points, and went on to finish second to Hudson at the Region III Meet. This would mark the fifth trip to state in the last six years, as the young group placed 10th. With most coming back, they are hungry to finish much better next year. Led by the freshmen duo of Mary Nguyen and Jessica Franklin, the Lady Cardinals won their eighth consecutive district title. They would go on to place only 13th at Regionals, but seemed very inspired by the guys qualifying for State. Scroll up a few years ago, to see what happened the last time the guys inspired the girls.
